A man described as a 'main player' in the riots seen in Blackpool last month has been jailed.

John Robinson, of Quebec Avenue, Blackpool, was jailed for three years.

The 31-year-old pleaded guilty to violent disorder and assaulting an emergency worker.

Blackpool Police said when arrested Robinson tried to rip one police officer's body camera and radio from his stab vest and tried to punch the officer in the head.

He was also verbally abusive towards police and members of the public using racist and xenophobic language.

Robinson was seen throwing a bottle at a police van and stopping members of the public in their cars to hurl abuse at them during the disorder on Saturday 3 August this year in the town centre.

Assistant Chief Constable Karen Edwards of Lancashire Constabulary said: "Robinson was a clear ringleader in the disorder on 3rd August. Not only was he violent and abusive towards members of the public and my officers, but he also encouraged others to emulate his disgraceful behaviour.

"This type of behaviour is not welcome in Lancashire. We will not tolerate disorder in our county.

“Robinson is just one of many being sentenced for his part in the disorder. I welcome the significant sentence handed down on him, and I hope this continues to show just how seriously these crimes are taken."
