A police officer has been hailed a hero after saving a woman from being swept out to sea.

Quick-thinking PC Nelson of Lancashire Police went into action after being alerted to the woman being in distress.

She had fallen down close to the sea after slipping off a sea defence wall on Blackpool Prom near to North Pier.

The incident took place on Wednesday 28 August just as Ride The Lights was about to start.

Bodycam footage released by police shows PC Nelson running along the promenade to secure a life ring and rope, and then quickly throw it down to the woman before she is swept into the sea close to the pier.

A Lancashire Police spokesperson said: "Knowing the danger she’d be in and thinking quickly, PC Nelson, along with his colleagues Sgt Higgs, PC Dixon and PC Walker, ran to her aid, throwing a life ring out and pulling her to safety.

"Whilst the lady was shaken, she received medical attention and has now made a full recovery thanks to PC Nelson’s incredibly swift actions, which just go to show that our officers have to be ready to attend to any kind of emergency at all times."
