A new community garden space is set to open in Blackpool with the aim of providing green space for residents who don't have their own garden.

Layton's Hidden Garden has been created at Layton Library in Blackpool and will be opened formally by performer Steve Royle, a former present on BBC Radio Lancashire and a Britain's Got Talent finalist.

The opening will be from 3pm tomorrow (21 August) and be followed by by activities such as stories for children and a bug hunt.

‘The Friends of Layton's Hidden Garden’ committee has been set up and will oversee the further development and use of the garden. The chair of the committee is Cllr John Boughton and vice chair is Cllr Kath Benson, both local Layton ward councillors.

Cllr John Boughton, chair of the committee, said: “This is a wonderful open green space. I am sure that many people will get a lot of pleasure using it. A big thanks goes out to everyone who was involved in making this project happen so that visitors to the library and local community have a pleasant new hidden garden.”

Cllr Jo Farrell, cabinet member for Levelling Up People at Blackpool Council, said: “The garden is a great addition to the library and I hope that it will encourage more residents to visit and enjoy all the library has to offer.

“This new green space also means the library will be able to provide even more activities including outdoor story time for our younger residents which is not only fun for the children but reading and being read too is hugely beneficial for their emotional wellbeing and their language development skills.”

Layton's Hidden Garden will be open when the library is open. This is Monday, Wednesday and Friday 10am-4pm and Saturday 10am-1pm.

The garden was developed in partnership with the Prince's Trust and Blackpool Sixth Form. Art students designed and painted two large murals while volunteers from the trust created a story circle, path and built two benches.
