Happy Friday! We hope you've had a good full working week back for many, and the weather has picked up a bit. Each Friday we'll bring you our picks from what we've published each week as The Lead's week that was digest for the week ending Friday 17 January 2025.

A reminder we're publishing over on Substack now so this site acts as an archive and we'll publish this digest each Friday. Our email newsletter lands in tens of thousands of inboxes each Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday with in-depth storytelling, incisive writing on topics not always making the headlines, our commitment to news and features across the North of England and more. It's free to receive the emails, and if you can please do support us with a paid subscription to ensure we can keep bringing you news and features on topics you might not see covered in the same depth elsewhere.

We kick off with Brexit, and Westminster Editor Zoë Grünewald reflects on the changing narrative around Brexit - and where this leaves the government, as Starmer has ruled out any change on the status quo. The Lib Dems have moved on the customs union this week, Kemi appears to be having a re-think but there's silence from Labour. Is this an opportunity?

With the grooming gangs inquiry on a local level announced and the allegations and mistruths from Elon Musk and Nigel Farage still swirling, our latest The Drift (our ongoing deep look at the new far-right emerging in the UK) from Diyora Shadijanova debunked some of the shocking claims made.

Our commitment to deep and in-depth storytelling about stories in the North of England continues, both in our local titles but also in fantastic writing from the likes of Hannah Hiles who set the agenda in Stoke-on-Trent this week with her update on the Walleys Quarry landfill saga and what those living nearby are enduring. While Kevin Gopal was in court for the appeal hearing about the Manchester 10. It is shocking how Ademola Adejeji was misidentified by police and wrongly spent years behind bars.

Elsewhere in our recent edition of The Teesside Lead, then Leigh Jones drilled into how 'Grey Labour' was affecting the response from MPs when it came to dealing with Metro Mayor Ben Houchen. A warning sign for those in power.

And in our newly launched The Southport Lead, we are leading the campaign to get Southport Pier re-opened and give the town an enormous economic shot in the arm. As well as it being fundamentally the right thing to do. Sign the petition.
